Everything You Should Know About Hyaluronic Acid

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in our skin. Its biggest claim is that it holds 1000 times its weight in water, making it an A-grade ingredient when it comes to keeping skin plump, hydrated and supple. In skincare, Hyaluronic Acid is heralded and used for its humectant properties, which help to draw and hold moisture, resulting in firmer, more moisturised skin. Although an acid by name, this ingredient is not of the exfoliating kind, rather the replenishing. Its lightweight, fast-absorbing, watery texture makes it a suitable moisturising ingredient for all skin types including oily and sensitive skin.

What does Hyaluronic Acid do?

Hyaluronic Acid helps bind water to collagen trapping it in the skin, so that the complexion appears plumper, dewier, and more hydrated. At the same time, it revitalises the skin’s outer surface layers, so they look and feel softer, smoother and radiantly hydrated. This results in the instant plumping and improved appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What is Hyaluronic Acid derived from?

Generally, Hyaluronic Acid for skincare is derived from plant and wheat fermentation. Wheat is fermented with bacteria, then purified and precipitated. This process extracts the Hyaluronic Acid naturally present in the wheat, creating a plant-based derived Hyaluronic Acid.

Why is Hyaluronic Acid important in skincare?

As we age, we lose Hyaluronic Acid and collagen naturally from the deeper layers of our skin, this results in the skin becoming dehydrated and appearing slack and lined. When we’re young, our skin can hold onto water and retain it much better, that’s why youthful skin is so plump, full and bouncy. A skincare routine incorporating Hyaluronic Acid in a mask, serum or cream is important as the ingredient works to supplement the skin’s water and collagen content so that the complexion retains its firmness and elasticity.

What are the key skin benefits of Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is a hero skin hydrator with serious anti-ageing benefits too. Depleting moisture is one of the main culprits of ageing skin. When skin is thirsty, fine dehydration lines appear, these lines are a precursor for deeper wrinkles to set in. When applied to the skin, Hyaluronic Acid acts like a big water magnet attracting 1000 times its weight in water to replenish the skin’s moisture levels and plump dehydration lines. Almost instantly, skin will appear smoother, firmer and more radiant.

As well as a gold-standard anti-ageing ingredient, new research shows that Hyaluronic Acid can reduce inflammation in the skin and increase the skin’s healing rate.

For a young complexion not yet concerned with skin ageing, but might be facing excess oiliness, acne or breakouts, Hyaluronic Acid is a brilliant lightweight moisturiser as the skin slurps it up quickly without leaving residue. It’s important to note, even oily skin needs water.

Hyaluronic Acid makes a brilliant skin primer when applied before make-up. Its skin smoothing and plumping properties create a glowy, bouncy base for make-up to glide over while preventing product sinking into fine lines.
